Technical details
The tool uses the browser's File, Blob, Canvas, and download APIs. Processing is intentionally performed in the foreground so it works on ordinary shared hosting without queues or background workers.
A bounded binary search tests encoding quality. When quality alone cannot satisfy the maximum, the algorithm progressively reduces pixel dimensions while respecting any minimum width and height.
Limitations and compatibility
Performance depends on available browser memory. Very large images or long PDFs may fail on mobile devices; close other tabs or process fewer pages. Animated images are flattened to the first decoded frame. Corrupted or encrypted files may be rejected.
An exact byte count cannot always be encoded. The result aims for the highest quality at or below a maximum, or within the selected range. The tool reports when the target is not practical.
Frequently asked questions
Does Compress Image to Exact MB upload my file?
No. The selected file is processed in this browser tab and is not transmitted to the website server.
What happens if my browser runs out of memory?
The tool stops and shows an error. Try a smaller file, fewer pages, a lower preview resolution, or a desktop browser with more available memory.
